Corrupt official appeals 14-year sentence

THE former deputy office director of the Shanghai Economy and Informatization Commission has appealed against his conviction for embezzlement and accepting bribes.

Miao Jinhe, 44, was jailed for 14 years last October for embezzling 50,000 yuan (US$7,321) and accepting 700,000 yuan in bribes.

He was said to have embezzled 50,000 yuan when in charge of vehicle services for a conference.

Miao also accepted more than 700,000 yuan in bribes for helping companies win a building project.

Miao told the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court on Tuesday that the 50,000 yuan was a payment from the vehicle company, not embezzlement.

He also said the bribes he was accused of were just amounts paid for introducing suppliers to a builder.

The appeal court hasn't announced a verdict in the case.
