Corruption cases rise 6.1% in Shanghai
SHANGHAI'S resolve to stamp out government corruption continued as prosecutors announced today that they dealt with 400 people in graft cases last year, up 6.1 percent from 2011.
The 400 people, including officials working for local government bodies and employees of state-owned companies, were involved in 334 embezzlement and bribery cases. The number of such cases increased nearly 10 percent from 2011.
The increase was mainly due to a crackdown by the Shanghai People's Procuratorate, which urged all prosecuting authorities across the city to strike hard against corrupt officials.
Last year, 43 people in the city were prosecuted for breach of duty in 38 cases. The number of suspects increased 19.4 percent from 2011, according to statistics.
