Couple arrested after mahjong club dispute
A COUPLE has been arrested for allegedly threatening to light themselves on fire and burn a house down during a dispute between them and a neighbor.
Bao Zhenfeng and her husband Liu Shaolai were charged with obstructing police from performing their duty by Zhabei District prosecutors.
Prosecutors said Bao dumped gas on herself and tried to light it. Her actions threatened her neighbors because the surrounding homes were wood structures.
The couple entered a mahjong club, run by a neighbor, on the ground floor of their building on June 9 and complained that the club was too noisy.
Police were called after the couple smashed three thermos bottles of hot water in the club.
When officers arrived, Bao demanded the neighbor pay for hospital treatment because she was scalded by the water. If not, the couple threatened to make more trouble.
Her husband, at the same time, took out two bottles. Liu said they contained gas and he would burn the house down, according to prosecutors.
Police called firefighters, ambulances and more cops. They also evacuated the building in case of fire.
Bao, seeing so many police officers, suddenly poured a bottle of liquid on herself. The smell of gas spread quickly. She then took out a lighter, threatening to burn the building, and her husband followed her lead, prosecutors said.
Police ran over and grabbed Bao's hands, preventing her from lighting the gas.
