Couples rush to marry on special day
NEARLY 1,000 couples have registered online to tie the knot on Monday as May 20 has an auspicious meaning since it has a similar pronunciation to "I love you" in Chinese.
As of yesterday, 947 couples had made marriage registration reservations online, said officials from the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau. Changning, Zhabei and Hongkou districts had the most registration reservations in the city at 160, 139 and 108 respectively.
Officials said the day will see a mini marriage boom although it will not be as big as January 4, when around 6,000 couples married in Shanghai.
"Special dates with auspicious meanings are now becoming increasingly popular among young people," said Yu Weiting, director of the Yangpu District Marriage Registration Center.
