Court Told Angry Mother Started Fire
A mother who allegedly started a fire at the home of her future son-in-law after she failed to get betrothal gifts was charged with arson yesterday by Putuo District prosecutors.
On December 31 last year, Huang went to her daughter's boyfriend Li's residence and asked for 50,000 yuan (US$7,317) as a betrothal gift, but his parents said they could not afford that much.
When Li and his parents went to their workshop to attend to business and Huang was left alone, she was so angry at the refusal that she set fire to the quilt in Li's room, prosecutors allege.
