Crackdown on city corruption

SHANGHAI had 822 government officials punished last year, including 10 sub-ministry level officials and 62 division chief, according to the disciplinary section of the city's Party committee.

Inspectors cracked down on 875 cases of corruption or disciplinary violations in 2008 and saved about 355 million yuan (US$51.9 million) in public funds, the disciplinary committee of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee reported.

Zhang Kepeng, the former vice director of the city's Putuo District, was disciplined for taking bribes.

Fan Xianyin, the former chairman of Shanghai-based Double Coin Holdings Ltd and the former vice president of Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company, was convicted for pocketing public funds and taking bribes.

Inspectors conducted 901 investigations last year. Sixty people were involved in 61 cases to do with land, environmental protection and relocation. Eighteen of these have been referred to judicial departments, the report said.

Inspectors punished 26 people held responsible for a gas station explosion on November 24, 2007, and seized 9.32 million yuan of money illegally collected in the city's education sector.

Civil servants in the city handed over 21.3 million yuan in cash and presents received last year, according to the disciplinary committee.

Some 9,206 allegations of misconduct involving city officials were found to be unproven, the report said.
