Crash kills 2 highway workers, injures 8

TWO people were killed and eight injured yesterday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into a group of road workers on a highway in the Pudong New Area, police said.

Two of the injured were still in critical condition last night, according to Renji Hospital. The other six were stable.

The cause of the accident was unclear and the driver was taken for investigation, according to the Pudong New Area Police.

The scene on the Middle Ring Road near Yanggao Road S., where the accident happened, was too horrible to look at, witnesses said.

"Big bloodstains were everywhere on the ground where lay eight or nine people," said Chen Yongqing, who passed by the scene yesterday.

It happened about 2pm, the police said. A group of workers were installing anti-glare shields in the middle of the Middle Ring Road. Suddenly a silver Ford Focus came from behind and hit the rear of their minibus, which was pulled over between two lanes. The impact forced the minibus into the group of victims.

The driver, a college girl, kept crying and trembling after the crash.

The car was severely damaged. So was the minibus.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead after the ambulance came.

Qin Jinzhang, 54, one of the two in critical condition, suffered a serious injury to the left leg, which was expected to be amputated, said a nurse. The other one, Qian Huixin, 45, broke his skull and brain stem. Both faced surgery.
