Crewman held for furtive flares
THE Waigaoqiao immigration police held a Chinese crew member on a Panama container cargo ship for attempting to bring eight signal flares into the country, officials said yesterday.
The police confiscated the four boxes of eight flares. This was the first case this year in which crew members tried to bring in flammable articles, said the immigration police. The 44-year-old man, surnamed Gu, hid the flares inside his suitcase, along with some clothes. But he didn't fool police, who spotted the flares and held him for further investigation. Gu said he planned to fire the flares as fireworks when on holiday with his family.
