Curtain comes down on conference

THE annual session of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference closed yesterday as Jiang Liang was elected as a vice chairman of the city's top political advisory body. Jiang, 58, is the director of the Pudong New Area.

Yin Yicui, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China, said at a closing event she expected the local CPPCC to continue to offer advice in 2011, the first year of the 12th Five-Year Plan.

Delegates submitted 902 proposals during the gathering, according to Feng Guoqin, chairman of the local committee of CPPCC.

The mechanism of the local committee of the CPPCC was set up in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. The session is usually held at the start of the year, to supervise and advise on the government's work plan.

Meanwhile, the annual session of the Shanghai People's Congress will close today, when a new vice mayor will be elected. Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng will hold a press conference this afternoon.
