Cute name sought for venue of world swimming event

THE city is seeking a nick name for the new Oriental Sports Center in Pudong to make it a well-known venue for the upcoming 14th FINA World Championships, Shanghai Sports Bureau said today.

The bureau said they wanted the venue to have a name as popular as the Bird's Nest and Water Cube for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Residents can submit their ideas through different media. The new name should be simple and easy to remember, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, the local organizer unveiled the event posters and theme song, "Dream on the Eastern Sea" and started the 100-day countdown.

Shanghai Sports Bureau Director Li Yuyi said the swimming championships, from July 16 to 30, will not just be a competition but also be a water festival for all Shanghai residents.

Activities related to water and swimming will be organized during the championships and residents are encouraged to join, Li told the media today.

To promote the event and the new sports center, the Jiyang Road Station of Metro Line 8 and Line 6 will be changed to the Oriental Sports Center Station, Li added.
