DNA leads to rapist's downfall years after his previous attacks

A SHANGHAI man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for sneaking into unlocked apartments and raping three women in 2004 and last year, the Hongkou District People's Court said yesterday.

Prosecutors said the 48-year-old convict, surnamed Sun, broke into an unlocked upper room in a shikumen-style house one midnight in April 2004. He used a knife to threaten a woman to give him cash and property and raped the woman. Afterwards, he wiped his fingerprints off the door with a kerchief, the court heard.

Prosecutors said the woman didn't lock the door because her boyfriend forgot to take the key with him.

On July 6, 2004, Sun raped a young woman in an old house on Baoding Road. The woman left the key in the door. Her parents were sleeping only a few meters away.

Prosecutors said Sun had a criminal record for rape and robbery and received a sentence of 14 years in prison in 1985. In 2005, Sun was put into jail again for two years for fraud. But they said his involvement in the two rapes in 2004 was not known then.

In May of last year, Sun lost money gambling and stole money and raped a woman sleeping alone in a room. Police tracked down Sun by matching his DNA from the latest rape to his record in a prisoner database.
