Dead knife victim 'picked at random'
CITY prosecutors said yesterday that the suspected killer of a university teacher picked his victim at random after a quarrel on a bus.
Police have arrested the suspect surnamed Yang, who allegedly confessed that he did not know the victim Tang Junnian, a teacher at Shanghai Maritime Academy, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Yang, a migrant worker in his 20s, allegedly said he killed Tang only because he was angry after a verbal fight on a bus on October 14. He got off the bus and supposedly decided to kill a random person to lash out, the report said.
Campus staff heard a man screaming for help about 6:15 pm and found Tang lying in a pool of blood when they broke into his office, said Wang Weimin, the assistant dean of the academy.
Wang said Yang locked himself in the office armed with a knife and waited until police came to seize him. Yang allegedly told him that he was sorry for the trouble.
