Dead pigs pulled out of Huangpu River

Carcasses of dead pigs were pulled out of the Huangpu River in Jinshan District recently in a repeat of similar cases that rocked the city last year.
In March last year, some 10,000 dead pigs were dumped into the waters by farmers in Zhejiang Province, prompting fears of water quality among residents.
Yesterday, the Shanghai government said it was teaming up with the government of neighboring Zhejiang Province to tighten the small and medium waterways in upstream Huangpu River to ensure water quality and cleaning the river.
They have enhanced cooperation to monitor water quality and stepped up efforts to remove “garbage and other floating items” from the river.
Last year, most of the dead pigs came from Jiaxing. Jiaxing officials later admitted the city raised a large number of pigs in very poor conditions. Unhealthy breeding environment, small pig farms and freezing weather killed a huge number of pigs, especially piglets that are more vulnerable to cold.
According to Jiaxing government, 70,000 pigs died due to crude raising techniques and extreme weather at the beginning of last year.
Officials admitted that some pig farmers were poorly informed about laws and dumped dead pigs into the river.
Jiaxing has more than 100,000 households who raise pigs. The city accounts for a quarter of the pigs raised in the province and sells about 4.5 million pigs every year. The Jiaxing animal husbandry department said the normal fatality rate of pigs is about 3 percent, which means 135,000 pigs die every year.
The treating sites in Jiaxing cannot match the huge number of dead pigs, and villagers prefer to dump the carcasses in the fields and rivers.
