A transit bus No. 44 ran into an elevated road pier around this noon on downtown Yan'an Road W, killing 2 passengers so far and leaving 20 others injured.

Five passengers and the bus driver are critically injured.

The front of the bus was severely damaged and fire fighters had to cut loose the driver from his seat.

The crash took place near a zebra crossing under the Yan'an Elevated Road, xinmin.cn reported.

A witness reportedly said several pedestrians were waiting to cross the road when the seemingly-out-of-control bus slammed into the pier.

The driver, in his 50s and surnamed Shen, has been in this industry for 20 years.
