District's top-ranking officials face punishments for opulent banquet held on evening of stampede

THE city’s discipline watchdog announced this morning that several top-ranking officials of Huangpu District, including the district’s Party Secretary Zhou Wei and  district director Peng Song, would be punished by Party rules for dining at public expenses on New Year’s Eve, shortly before dozens of people lost their lives in the Bund stampede tragedy.

The investigation was ordered following reports that officials from the district — which administers the Bund — dined at a high-end restaurant in the Bund Origin area of the city, where a ticket-only light show was held, a spokesman for the city’s Party discipline inspection commission said.

The investigation found the officials were invited by Zhou Xumin, president of the Bund Investment Group, a state-owned company to pay an inspection visit to a high-end shopping mall in the area after the light show and count-down event. Zhou offers a late night dinner at the restaurant for 2,700 yuan.
