Divorce a new fashion for the young
ALTHOUGH the overall divorce rate dropped last year in Shanghai, the number of young people under the age 30 who divorced last year increased by nearly 20 percent on a year before, according to civil affairs authorities.
Officials said many young people were not treating marriage seriously whether getting married or divorcing.
"We came across a case in Huangpu District," said Zhou Jixiang, director of the marriage management division of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau. "A woman got married five times and got divorced four times in the past two years."
Zhou also said some young people rushed into marriage registration on August 8, to catch the "Olympic marriage tide." "Many young couples regretted this and wanted to divorce after a few months," Zhou said.
The number of men from other provinces marrying Shanghai women increased. "During the 1990s, about 90 percent of people who found a Shanghai partner were women and they usually married Shanghai men who had difficulty finding a local wife," said Zhou. "This year, 30 percent of out-of-towners were well educated men."
The city saw more than 138,000 couples tie the knot last year, up near 18 percent than 2007's, while more than 36,800 couples divorced, down 0.7 percent, said the bureau.
