'Doctor' jailed after death of patient
AN unlicensed doctor whose misdiagnosis caused the sudden death of a patient has been jailed for three years and fined 5,000 yuan (US$793) for illegal medical practice by Xuhui District People's Court.
Prosecutors said the man, surnamed Feng, was not certified as a medical practitioner but had run a private clinic on Luocheng Road in Xuhui District since March 2006. Feng's illegal business, which lasted for more than three years, was not revealed until one of his patients, surnamed Yuan, died due to misdiagnosis and wrong treatment, the court heard.
On April 27, 2009, Feng was twice invited by the victim's family to see the sick patient at home, also on Luocheng Road. Feng injected Yuan with glucose and painkillers which resulted in Yuan's sudden death, prosecutors said.
Experts at Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University said Feng had misdiagnosed Yuan's illness and caused proper treatment to be delayed.
After the incident, Feng apologized to Yuan's relatives and paid them 50,000 yuan (US$7.934) compensation.
The unlicensed doctor surrendered to police on September 30, the court heard.
