Doctors discuss cancer treatment at medical forum

China has the most new cases of cancer each year in the world, medical experts told a forum discussing a new surgical technology for the disease at Shanghai Chest Hospital.
Six people are being diagnosed with cancer every minute in China and one out of every 10 deaths in the country is due to cancer, experts said.
Robotic surgery is widely used to treat cancer now, while patients can also opt for advanced radioactive therapies over traditional surgery and chemotherapy.
According to Dr Yao Liqing from Zhongshan Hospital, early detection and treatment are crucial for survival, however the rate of early detection in China is much lower than the West.
“There are over 160,000 people killed by gastric cancer in China every year, while less than 10 percent of the patients are detected in the early stage. The rate is over 30 percent in Japan,” Yao said. “The incidence of colorectal cancer in Shanghai has been in line with Western countries, however only 10 to 15 percent are found in early stage. It is 25 to 30 percent in the West.”
