Doctors remove pen nib from 8-year-old boy

LOCAL doctors removed a pen nib from the airway of an 8-year-old boy and said they have received many cases of children’s swallowing odd items like small top parts, shell of melon seeds, clip and peanuts, officials from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center said today.

The boy, an Anhui native, swallowed the pan nib about one month ago. He suffered cough, fever and short of breath afterwards.

Doctors said the boy can suffer lung infection if pen nib is not taken out in time. The team at SCMC used bronchoscope to take out it, avoiding a cut-open surgery.

“Foreign items choked into airway can be fatal and parents must arouse awareness to prevent such accidents,” said Dr Chen Jie from the hospital. “They should send their children to hospital if they have symptoms like repeated heavy cough and fever and symptoms don’t relieve after receiving medication. There is a possibility the air passage has some odd things.”

Choking kills about 3,000 children in China every year. Big objects can cause severe cough, vomiting and short of breath. It is extremely risky and emergency aid must be given.

Doctors said parents shouldn’t allow their children below five years old to have access to small items and not feed them when they are crying. If a child suffers choking, parents should conduct Heimlich maneuver in time and send the child to a hospital immediately.
