Doctors urge early detection of nasopharyngeal cancer
ABOUT 70 to 80 percent of domestic patients with nasopharyngeal cancer are detected with disease in the middle or terminal stage, as the early detection of the cancer remained low in the nation in the past years, medical experts told a national nasopharyngeal cancer conference in Shanghai.
Chinese patients cover about 80 percent of total nasopharyngeal cancer in the world. People in the south has higher incidence than those in the north. The medical capability has improved on cancer treatment, as over 90 percent of domestic patients being detected with the disease in early stage can survive over five years, which is considered as recovery in the medical field.
But the percentage of early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment remained low in China.
“Symptoms of early nasopharyngeal cancer are easily being ignored by people, while grassroots doctors are not familiar with the cancer,” said Dr Hu Chaosu from Shanghai Tumor Center, one of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals. “People had better visit a specialist if having blood in snot or swollen lymph gland in the neck, especially those with family history of the disease.”
There are about 500 new patients in Shanghai annually.
