Donations pour in for survivors
THE Shanghai Charity Foundation yesterday received more than 1.1 million yuan (US$165,600) in donations to help survivors of the deadly fire at a 28-story residential building in Jing'an District.
Yesterday morning the foundation distributed 500,000 yuan to survivors.
The foundation also delivered relief supplies, including clothing, quilts and pillows, to 16 temporary shelters for survivors - valued at 200,000 yuan.
"We keep getting phone calls from people pledging to donate money," said Li Chen, an official with the foundation.
City God Temple and Jade Buddha Temple also made donations.
Representatives of the temples also said monks would keep the victims in their prayers.
A woman surnamed Liu donated more than 50 scarves, which she had knitted herself, the foundation said.
Foundation officials are still calling for more donations.
