All three people, including the driver, were injured and the incident was still under investigation, police said.
The conflict happened about 8pm, when the two victims, a woman surnamed Hu and her relative surnamed Shi, were hailing a taxi after a dinner with relative near the Wujiaochang Station of Metro Line 10 in Yangpu District. An illegal cab driver surnamed Wang offered a ride, according to the Xinmin Evening News.
Shi first ignored the cab, then a quarrel arose as the driver kept insisting, Shi's nephew, surnamed Liu, told the newspaper.
Having failed to make a deal, Wang pulled out a club and started to beat Shi, who was hit in the head.
