Driver detained after fatal hit-and-run

A SUSPECT in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Baoshan District was detained yesterday, police said - two days after the family of the victim posted an Internet appeal for help.

The accident happened about 5:50pm last Saturday at the intersection of Changjiang Road S. and Changjiang Road W. The body of Yuan Lianggu, aged 48, was found by his damaged electric scooter.

The collision was not captured by surveillance cameras and no witnesses were found when police arrived at the scene, officers said.

Traffic police checked video records of 18 surveillance cameras near the intersection and found that a flatbed truck passed the area at the time of the accident. It aroused suspicion as its profile seemed to match tire marks on Yuan's body, police said.

A man driving the truck, surnamed Guo, was detained yesterday morning when the truck appeared again on surveillance monitors, police said. Guo, a 48-year-old from Anhui Province, has been detained for traffic offences.

Yuan's family turned to the web to find witnesses in a bid to track down the driver. They posted a microblog on Sunday morning asking netizens for help. The post was retweeted nearly 4,000 times by yesterday.

Meanwhile, a fatal accident involving a flatbed truck occurred yesterday in Jiading District, killing a child and injuring two adults on a scooter.

About 6:40am at the intersection of Bao'an Highway and Chenbao Road, a flatbed truck hit the family of three on the scooter, witnesses said.
