Driver dies in plunge into river

A MAN was killed when the car he was driving plunged into a river yesterday.

The middle-aged driver was pronounced dead after the car was pulled out.

The accident happened about 7:40am in Putuo District. The man drove through a greenery area and broke through a river-side barrier near Shuishan and Xuesong roads.

"I just heard a loud noise," said a resident, surnamed Wu, whose balcony faces the river. Wu said he saw the top of the car at the water's surface at first, but as he arrived about five minutes later, it was submerged.

Together with another resident surnamed Cao, Wu grabbed some tools like a hammer and wood stick to rescue the driver.

Cao jumped in and broke the car's back window. "The driver was just lying there unconscious," said Cao.

The car was later pulled from the river.

Police are investigating.
