Driver drowns after van hits car, falls into creek

A MINIVAN driver was killed when he drowned after his vehicle collided with a car and plunged into a creek yesterday in the Pudong New Area.

The driver of the car, a woman, was in stable condition in a nearby hospital.

Three people tried to rescue the minivan driver.

They pulled him from the van and performed first-aid but he was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

"The creek is deep and the minivan was mostly submerged," said Gan Tao, who was one of the three who pulled the man from the vehicle. "I thought by then that we could save him."

The collision happened about 8:35am at the intersection of Furonghua and Landian roads. The van plunged into the creek after colliding with the car.

The three rushed to help and jumped into the water, surveillance camera footage showed. It was unclear what caused the accident and police said they are still investigating.
