Driver faces manslaughter case after fatal crash

PUDONG New Area Prosecutors Office yesterday approved the arrest of a driver suspected of killing one woman and injuring 12 while driving in a residential area on September 5.

The 37-year-old man surnamed Tang was charged with manslaughter after he mistook the accelerator for the brake because of his lack of driving experience.

Prosecutors said that he hadn't driven much after gaining his driving license in 2007. He borrowed the car from a friend but hit another car about 8am in a residential complex at Linyi Road and careered into about a dozen people and two other cars before crashing into a wall.

A 56-year-old woman was killed at the scene, while the injured included one person aged 87.
