Driver gets prison, fine for killing S. Korean
A DRIVER who killed a South Korean man and injured his granddaughter after he lost control of his car while looking for his cell phone was sentenced to 18 months in prison with a two-year reprieve yesterday, a local court said.
The driver, surnamed Jin, hit a car in the opposite lane while looking for his phone on August 7.
Jin's car then bounced off and hit a South Korean man and his granddaughter who were riding a scooter on a non-vehicle lane on their way to school, local prosecutors said.
The injured man died despite hospital treatment while the girl was injured.
Jin was also ordered to pay more than 618,000 yuan (US$99,436) in compensation to the victim's family. The court rejected their demand for 1 million yuan under South Korean standards.
