Driver killed, pedestrian 'critical'

A DRIVER was killed instantly in Yangpu District yesterday after hitting two vehicles and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a woman, 27, from Vietnam, suffered severe injuries and was comatose and in critical condition last night, Xinhua Hospital said.

The woman is a graduate student of nearby Tongji University, the hospital said.

Yangpu District police said the car drove to the wrong lane before the crash about 1:30pm. The sedan was heading north on Siping Road, police said.

When it passed Dalian Road, the car suddenly moved to the oncoming lane and hit a taxi and a minibus, witnesses said.

The car then swung sharply, hit the pedestrian and crashed onto a roadside steel pole, they said.

"The car was driving too fast," said a witness surnamed Xia.

Although the air bags opened, the 62-year-old driver, surnamed Lou, was killed.

Lou's wife, sitting beside him in the passenger seat, was not injured.
