Driver sentenced to life for dragging traffic cop, causing him to fall to death

A 32-year-old driver who dragged a traffic cop for nearly 10 meters and caused him to fall to death was sentenced to life imprisonment Tuesday, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said.

The man, Sun Haojie, was arrested on March 11 after knocking down police officer Mao Shengquan, also 32, while driving his BMW across the junction of Wuzhong and Hongxu roads in Minhang District.

According to prosecutors, Mao was working a routine shift at the junction of Wuzhong and Hongxu roads at 5:25pm on March 11, when Sun's red BMW was noticed beyond the area it should be waiting in. His traffic violation was soon corrected by Mao.

Later when Sun was trying to make an illegal left turn from a lane in which vehicles can only go straight ahead, Mao approached his car again and ordered him to drive ahead. But Sun didn't listen to him and sped up to force his way to the left which made Mao hold on to his car window frame to halt him. Mao had been chasing the car for some 16 meters with his hand gripping the frame but soon failed to keep up with it and was dragged for 9.6 meters. After that, Mao fell and had his head striking the ground heavily.
