Drivers on cellphones fined 200 yuan, merit points deducted
Songjiang District police last week fined 30 drivers for using mobile phones while driving.
The drivers were fined 200 yuan, and 2 points were deducted from their driving merit points, Shanghai Television reported yesterday.
If a driver has all the 12 points deducted, his or her driving license would be temporarily suspended.
To ban the use of cellphones while driving, police have installed surveillance cameras on roads. They would then study the snapshot of the driver taken by the cameras.
A truck driver was found making a phone call while driving with both his hands off from steering wheel.
It is not easy for policemen to catch evidence while guiding the traffic,” said Zhu Jing, deputy chief of a police station. “That’s why we use are using cameras.”
