Drivers try to escape checks, hit 2 officers

TWO drivers were detained after hitting police officers over the weekend, police said yesterday.

About 2pm Sunday, traffic officer Xu Wenjun tried to question a female driver surnamed Shen when the license plate on her Mitsubishi sedan looked suspicious in downtown Xuhui District. Police said the woman in her 30s had covered up her license plate, a serious violation under new traffic laws, police said.

However, Shen stepped on the gas and knocked Xu down. The officer has a fractured ankle and is in stable condition, police said.

Shen was driving illegally since her driving license had been suspended for drunk driving and is facing criminal charges of interference with public functions.

On Saturday, an unlicensed taxi driver was detained after he knocked down an officer.

The officer, Liu Ying, motioned the cabbie, surnamed Yang, to pull over.

Yang tried to escape but was blocked by Liu. He stepped on the gas, knocked down Liu and drove away.

Liu was not seriously hurt. Yang was driving an unlicensed taxi and is held for disrupting public service.
