Drowning, crashes top killers of students
DROWNING remained the top killer of local primary and secondary school students last year as it accounted for nearly half of the 56 student deaths, according to the 2012 Shanghai Elementary and Secondary School Students Safety report issued yesterday.
Most of the drowning incidents happened in suburban areas where students swim or wash clothes in unattended rivers and pools, according to the report.
Traffic accidents were the second highest cause of death, accounting for 18 percent of the deaths, the report said.
Students' suicides have decreased significantly as preventative measures were put in place.
Three students killed themselves last year over family disputes and love affairs, compared with 13 in 2011.
A total of 2,472 students were injured or killed last year, 607 more than in 2011, the report said. Most of the injuries were from sports and games between students.
