Drug addict commits thefts disguised as teacher

A woman drug addict pretended to be a teacher making a home visit and stole more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,570) of cash and other items from nine homes was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison today.

Baoshan District prosecutors said the 29-year-old convict, surnamed Li, stole two cell phones, one camera and 8,520 yuan in cash from nine families who thought Li was a teacher of their child between August and October of 2010.

Li would tell the families that it was the school that sent her to make a routine home visit and she was substituting for her colleagues.

In one case, she asked the parents to go out and get her a copy of their child's transcript and told the student to write a composition in her own room. When there was no one around, she stole their money and other valuables and fled, the prosecutors said.

Li also sneaked into two schools last June and in February this year and stole seven cell phones, transport cards, shopping coupons, a credit card and 3,000 yuan in cash.
