Drug smuggling increasing
DRUG smuggling is on the increase with local Customs officials seizing 150 kilograms of drugs since last July, 7.3 times the volume taken in the same period the previous year.
The drugs were involved in 40 incidents, 2.6 times the number uncovered in the same period last year, and 50 suspected drug smugglers were caught during the period.
Customs officials said two major factors helped cause the increase in drug smuggling. The global financial crisis had increased unemployment in some countries. And the price of heroin in the domestic market has kept rising.
"Drug smugglers are trying more harder to bring in more varieties of drugs," said Lu Xiangqing, director of the publicity department of Shanghai Customs. "Customs officers are working hard using technology to find drugs and are applying risk analysis to concentrate on key targets."
