Drunk driving falls by 75 percent
SHANGHAI traffic police said drunk driving in the city has seen a 75 percent plunge after tougher penalties were put in place over a year ago.
Police said they will continue the crackdown. The city reported cases of drunk driving had fallen to 2,030 since May 1 of last year, when the traffic police introduced more severe punishment. National numbers also declined during the period, by about 70 percent. Under the new law, drunk drivers who cause "severe consequences," such as damage and injuries, can be jailed for six months, but punishment also can go up to the death penalty in the worst cases.
