Drunk man a suspect in death
A TRAFFIC assistant died after he was punched in the head by an intoxicated man over the weekend in Jiading District.
Zhang Genbao, 53, was dealing with a traffic accident at the intersection of Jinshajiang Road W. and Fenghua Road along with police officers around midnight on Saturday when he was punched in the head.
Police said Zhang saw the man, surnamed Wu, intrude on the accident scene and get in a police car. The officers and Zhang could smell alcohol on Wu's breath.
A police officer persuaded Wu to exit the car. Police asked for back up, but Wu escaped and crossed the road.
About 10 minutes later, Wu returned to the accident scene. As Zhang retrieved some documents from the police car, Wu rushed over and punched him on the temple and fled, according to police.
Witnesses said Zhang initially seemed OK after being hit, but he soon collapsed and fainted.
He died on the way to hospital.
Zhang's daughter told police that her father had been a traffic assistant for five years.
He was healthy, without any heart or brain disease, the daughter said.
"We are extremely sad and shocked," she said. "We never thought his life would end that way."
The family has asked for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the daughter said.
Wu, a migrant worker from Liaoning Province, was detained as the investigation continues.
The city's Public Security Bureau has taken a sample of Wu's blood to determine the alcohol content.
