Drunken hit, run on cop brings charges

A drunk driver who knocked down and seriously hurt a traffic police officer was charged with intentional injury yesterday, Songjiang District prosecutors said.

Zhao Huiqiang, 27, drank wine before he drove a minibus on the night of June 1 and was stopped by police at Canghui Road and Cangfeng Road in Songjiang District.

Zhao was asked to take a blood-alcohol test and the result was 115 milligrams per milliliter - nearly six times the legal limit of 20mg/ml, prosecutors said.

To avoid punishment, Zhao pretended to have a drink and went back to the driver's seat. He started the vehicle suddenly, gunned the engine and escaped from the scene after hitting the police officer, Qian Yong, and a police assistant who sprayed tear gas in a vain attempt to stop him.

Qian suffered severe fractures and was injured in the head, chest and lung.

Zhao was caught by the police three days later.
