Dust from north pollutes air in Shanghai
SHANGHAI’S air is moderately polluted as dust brought by the sandstorm sweeps through the city from north China.
The air quality index rose to 161 as of 8am. The major pollutants are PM 10 whose density soared from 6am to 8am, according to the weather bureau and environment monitoring center.
The concentration of PM10 has exceeded 300 micrograms per cubic meter at some monitoring sites while the WHO’s guideline for PM10 density is 20 micrograms per cubic meter.
Today’s air quality will range between lightly to moderately polluted.
Residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut, reduce outdoor activity or wear masks.
This year's worst sandstorm swept over much of north China on Thursday, including Beijing, turning the skies yellow and obscuring visibility.
