'Earthquake' led mother to throw son to death
A MOTHER who threw her four-year-old son to his death before falling on him on Friday said she did so to escape from "an earthquake."
Relatives of the woman, surnamed Zhou, said she has had mental health problems since May. Police have contacted local mental health center to carry out an appraisal.
Zhou, 35, who suffered back injuries and fractures to her left foot after jumping from the fourth-floor apartment is receiving treatment at a hospital in Baoshan District under police guard.
Her husband, who is in his late 30s, returned to Shanghai from out-of-town work on Friday night and was said to be heartbroken by the incident.
It is reported that he cannot accept what happened.
Zhou's aunt said Zhou developed a mental disorder in May and that she accompanied her niece to a mental health center on three occasions.
They thought she had recovered as her mood had been more stable since after receiving shots and medication.
"She will be exempt from criminal responsibilities if mental illness is confirmed," said Zeng Ni, an official with the Baoshan District Police Bureau. Police said they want to carry out an appraisal today, but the mental health center had yet to respond.
On July 4, a 29-year-old father threw his 10-month-old son to his death from the 14th floor of an apartment building in Minhang District.
