Elderly cyclist 'in blind spot' killed in collision with bus
AN elderly cyclist died after being struck by a bus as he rode out of his neighborhood in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning.
Witnesses said a minibus that had stopped in front of the No. 610 bus, near the gate of Lane 225 Dezhou Road, may have blocked the driver's view.
The bus was traveling at a high speed, witnesses added.
Kong, 78, was knocked from his cycle and hit his head on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police were still investigating the accident yesterday afternoon.
"I don't know what happened. My father was going to the wet market," said Kong's son.
Residents said parking along Dezhou Road causes major inconvenience.
The bus was attempting to pull out in front of the minibus that had stopped when the accident occurred at about 8:40am, witnesses said.
Kong was probably screened by the minibus and when the bus driver saw him, it was too late to avoid the collision, said a witness, surnamed Zhou.
"The minibus had pulled over temporarily, as the driver seemed to be asking directions," Zhou said.
"The cyclist came out of the lane and I believe there was a blind spot for the bus driver."
"There was a bang after the driver slammed the brakes, so we knew something had happened," said a bus passenger.
No passengers were reported injured.
The bus driver was taken away at about 10:15am for further investigations.
