Electric Expo buses start trial runs
THE first batch of 40 green buses at the Expo site began trial runs today, launched by China's Science and Technology Minister Wan Gang.
A charging station has been built at the west of Pudong Expo site for the 120 buses. Each can run about 100 kilometers after charging for eight hours.
Workers will change batteries at the station to save time during the Expo.
Charging stations were also built at every stop along Expo Avenue, the main road of the Pudong site. The super capacitor buses will charge for about five minutes at every stop.
A hydrogen filling station in south Pudong site and two filling vehicles will supply hydrogen for fuel-cell vehicles.
A total of 1,017 passenger buses will take visitors, VIPs and Expo workers at the Expo site. The buses use super capacitors, hydrogen fuel-cells and electricity.
Thirty-six super capacitor and six fuel-cell buses will stop at sections for Asian, European, African participants as well as International Organizations in the Pudong side of the Expo site.
Another 120 electric buses will take visitors between the two sides of the Huangpu River through the Xizang S. Road Tunnel.
The buses have around 30 seats. They will roll by every three minutes. Visitors will be able to find a shuttle bus station every 300 meters within the 5.28-square-kilometer Expo site,
About 70 fuel-cell cars will serve VIPs during the event.
More than 100 electric 11-seat golf cart-like vehicles will take visitors mainly on the elevated pedestrian paths that link the pavilions.
