Electricity turned off in robbery attempt

A WOULD-BE robber armed with a knife switched off the electricity supply to a home to lure out its occupants, police said yesterday.

When the man tricked a woman into opening the door on Thursday, he threatened her with a knife outside the apartment in the Pudong New Area.

The householder, a woman surnamed Zhang, said the power was turned off three times outside her home on Pudong's Dongjing Road.

Zhang's mother stepped out to check the electricity box, and moments later Zhang said she heard her screaming for help. A man had leapt out brandishing a knife and was threatening the older woman. "The knife was just inches from my mother's neck," said Zhang.

However, he fled the scene when Zhang came out.

The victim said the man is of medium height and doesn't have a local accent.
