Elevator operators make repairs in bid to improve safety
MORE than 100 elevators at public venues and residential communities were found to have safety hazards and 11 have been shut down pending repairs, Shanghai's quality watchdog said yesterday in the wake of several elevator accidents.
The operators of 106 elevators were asked to take action to eliminate safety risks. More than 80 of these elevators have since been repaired, the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said.
The bureau has checked 2,146 elevators around the city.
Last month, a woman was seriously injured in a residential building in Songjing District. Witnesses said an elevator was on the 16th floor and then shot up to the 27th floor at high speed. The elevator brake malfunctioned and poor maintenance was likely to blame, an investigation found.
