Elevator workers responsible for woman's death

A woman fell six floors down an elevator shaft in a shop building on Nanjing Road E. on Saturday and initial investigation found repairmen who removed a warning sign from the door of the elevator were responsible for her death.

The workers temporarily put away the warning sign as they were about to install the door frame, but they failed to leave someone to guard the empty shaft, Youth Daily reported today.

The elevator maintenance company has contacted the victim's family to discuss compensation, the paper said.

The 35-year-old woman from central Hunan Province fell to her death at lunch time on Saturday after she walked into the doorless elevator shaft in Hualian Commercial Building on the Nanjing Road pedestrian mall.
