'Emerging power of Internet' center of attention at city film festival

The 18th Shanghai International Film Festival emphasized the emerging power of Internet for China's flourishing movie industry. This year's festival has launched Internet Film Carnival, a new program held from June 15 to 17.

Veterans of both Internet and traditional film industries gathered and exchanged their views on Internet film investment, marketing and production at yesterday's summit on Internet and film industry investment.

Promising Internet programs yesterday also pitched for venture capital. Creative film projects will be funded.

Li Xia, a veteran film producer said that it is a trend for Internet to merge with film production and distribution. "Big data analytics from the Internet gives us a good reference for film investment and marketing," said Li. "Based on the demands of Netizens, some film stories can also be developed into by-products like online game."

Li Chuan, an official with China Media Capital said that they will fund film projects with creative content and experienced production and marketing team.

More and more popular online novels and games will be put onto the big silver screen.

Research institute Analysys on Wednesday released a report on the rapid merging trend of Internet and film.

According to the report, Internet films are becoming a rising and dynamic genre in Chinese cinema.

The major film audiences in China now are post-90s generation people who have grown up with the strong influences of the Internet.

"Internet will innovate China's film industry with its big data analytics and new technology," said Yu Yang, president of Analysys. "In the near future we will see tailor-made movies for certain groups of Netizens. These movies will have totally different endings to offer diversified and special viewing experiences."

Movie buffs were also offered an Internet film gala and exhibition of popular Internet movies, such as superhero film "A Hero Or Not," animated film "Roco Kingdom 4" and romantic movie "Cafe, Waiting, Love."
