Empty bus wrecks store
A DOWNTOWN building was left leaning to one side after being hit by a runaway bus early yesterday morning.
About 5am, a No. 14 trolley bus crashed into a cigarette and wine store at the intersection of Fujian Road M. and Niuzhuang Road.
The impact created a large hole in the store's roller shutter door, cracked the exterior concrete wall, demolished half the ceiling and sent wine bottles smashing to the ground. The front of the bus was also destroyed in the crash.
Before the accident, the bus had ground to a halt at Niuzhuang bus station due to a power failure.
The bus driver left the vehicle to make a phone call to report the power loss to the bus administrator.
However, while the driver was on the phone, the electricity supply resumed and the bus careered forward several meters, hitting the store at 490 Fujian Road M.
A lamppost in front of the shop took some of the impact.
No one was injured and there were no passengers onboard at the time.
A witness suggested that the driver may have forgotten to put on the handbrake.
Traffic police rushed to the busy intersection but a traffic jam built up on Fujian Road M.
Property management staff arrived soon afterwards to reinforce the house.
