Empty transit bus runs on reverse direction for 8 kilometers in overhead crash, killing innocent van driver

A vegetable van driver was killed on the scene on a local elevated driveway around 5am today when his vehicle collided with an empty transit bus that was running on a reverse direction.

"That was astonishing," an official with the bus company said after the crash. The No.952 bus driver, aged 48, has serviced behind the wheels for 25 years and has a perfectly clean safety driving record, said the company official.

The official said the ticket conductor, who was also on board, said she had reminded the driver that the bus was running on the wrong side of the road but her warning was ignored. "The driver could actually make an exit easily through a ramp to drive back to the right lane but he didn't. It's so weird," the official added.

Before the crash, the bus had just left its depot near Baoyang Dock, heading for its terminal station at the People's Square, the bus company confirmed.

The bus had been running on the wrong lane on the Wusong Bridge for nearly 8 kilometers before it ran into the vegetable van, killing its driver. A passenger on the van was injured.

The crash is still under investigation, police said.
