Entry-Exit number rises 10% at Hongqiao airport

The number of people entering and exiting the country at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport increased 10 percent last month compared to a year earlier, according to the Hongqiao Entry-Exit Frontier Inspection Station.

About 275,000 people, a daily average of more than 9,000, entered or exited the country at airport in July, up 30 percent than a normal day.

Inspection officers said the increased was due to students taking educational tours with their families to destinations like Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and South Korea.

More countries and regions offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel to Chinese, including the South Korean island of Jeju, Indonesia and the Maldives. This makes them very popular among local tourists, inspection officers said.

According to some market participants, the rush of overseas students will occur in late August and early September, when schools begin their new semester.
