Evacuation flights delayed by Mediterranean fog

FLIGHTS from Shanghai to Malta to pick up Chinese evacuees from Libya did not take off this morning due to foggy weather in the Mediterranean which is delaying the passenger liner carrying the evacuees.

Chinese Foreign Ministry said this morning that they could not confirm the ship's exact time of arrival in Malta.
The eight flights by Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines are not expected to take off before 6pm today.

Flight to Malta in the Mediterranean takes about 13 hours.

The eight planes are expected to pick up about 2,100 Chinese citizens and 570 of them will come to Shanghai, officials said.

By this morning, nearly 5,000 Chinese had left Libya in China's largest-ever evacuation effort to bring about 30,000 Chinese nationals out of the violence-torn North African state.
