Event honors Romanian war hero

A ceremony was held yesterday in Shanghai to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Dr Bucur Clejan, a Romanian doctor who worked in China during the World War II.
The event was arranged by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the China-Romania Friendship Association and held at the Soong Ching-ling Mausoleum, where Clejan’s ashes were placed in 2008.
“Bucur Clejan is a symbol of the friendship between Romania and China, and should be remembered for ever,” Romanian Consul-General in Shanghai Florin Marius Tacu said.
Dr Clejan arrived in China in 1939 as a volunteer. After his first wife died, he married a local nurse, Zhao Jingpu. On their return to Romania, Zhao helped to edit the country’s the first ever Chinese-language magazine.
Dr Clejan died in Romania in 1975, while his wife, who became Nelly Clejan, died last September in Shanghai.
